    Pros:
Best bang for your buck, easy to use
    Cons:
testing for color change when test liquid is all over your fingers
I hardly find water hardness tests kits in retail stores now. This one's simple: take a sample, add testing reagent, shake, note color, and keep adding reagent drop-by-drop until color changes. The # of drops is your reading (in different values specific to which hardness). Liquid tends to slightly leak out when capping and uncapping to test and shake.

API Hardness test kit saved my fish

    Pros:
Effective, Easy to Use, Good Value
    Cons:
Our local water supply this summer has/had high General Hardness - but I didn't know that was the reason I was losing fish. Many of my fish prefer softer water. My 20 gallon tested 14 degrees of hardness. I purchased an API water softening pillow and brought the general hardness down to 6 degrees. I now test with every water change to make sure the hardness doesn't rise above 6 degrees of hardness. Fortunately, I didn't have problems with my 75 gallon aquarium. Test kit is safe when used as directed - test away from your aquarium (as the reagents are harmful to fish).
